A few years ago we had done some work with using telephone calling into VXML systems to control “stuff” — using telephone calls to control stuff on a back end and then exhibit the result of those controls on screens and so forth. Sort of an entertainment thing. It looksl ike Twilio spits back stuff to the person calling over the phone line. Cool!

@lyn — soundtracks for everyday speech acts is cool..i’d love to have a sound designer along with me for my day of activities!

I decided I don’t want indoor GPS to tell me where my car keys are but I want them to whimper when they are not in the “right” place and really start crying when not in the right place and I am not around – I think you could do this by observing ambient WiFi.

Radio DJ’s have been playing with sound to give context for a long time. Howard Stern talks through a cheap bullhorn when doing an impression to convey that someone is calling in.

Have you seen Twilio.com ? They make it simple and cheap to play with phone calls and text messages. Now anything and any place can have a phone number. What if every book had a phone number where you could leave messages or jump into a conference call? What if every traffic jam had a phone number?

Kind of creepy, but seems like it will happen. Also: more This American Life-style soundtracks for everyday speech acts as well as public speaking.
