I think we’re in the Jurassic era when it comes to devices. There’s the phone, sure — but I can imagine that what we have now? That’ll be the source of amusement of the variety that those of us who had Palm Pilot’s wryly consider how different things have been in the past.

I agree with all your points here, the sony vision of the future seems to have been dictated by what will make some kewl visuals.

But I am really intrigued as to what the next iPhone moment will be. Something that massively improves our lives and the efficiency / ease of our interactions with the digital world. Wearable computing has been mentioned, but I don’t know if that’s necessarily the ticket. I think humans like having a phone that does everything, but also like being able to stow it away in the pocket and just look at the world. Hyperconnectivity need not mean permanent connectivity – otherwise we all would have been wearing bluetooth headsets long ago. I see smart phones being refined, made lighter, maybe expandable, bendable screens but all synched up with our home environments. The question is, what elements of the home would really push the envelope by being connected? Is it really that much hassle to open the curtains or are you going to want to do it through your phone.
